email problems – really frustrated!

Had not been getting emails for orders for a week or so, for no obvious reason. Spent some time tonight and found I had multiple copies of email templates.
Deleted them all and regenerated defaults. Yay – all working.
Spent some time playing with footers etc., doing multiple deleting of templates and recreating them. All seemed OK…but, now, just as I was happy with the last changes, regenerating defaults does not create any emails 🙁
Whatever I do, and I cannot get any email templates.
Only possible clue is that I emptied the trash bin of all deleted emails shortly before I saw this issue.
How do I get my emails back so I know of orders etc!!??
