 * Hi, I have been using the free version of the plugin for several years without
   issue. We use WP Forms Lite on our contact page. The mailer is Google.
 * Recently it came to light that we are not receiving any form emails. It’s not
   an email address issue. I then tried sending a test email, which used to work
   OK. Now it causes the error _“There has been a critical error on this website.
   Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”_ every time. However,
   it’s not really a critical error at all, as the website still functions.
 * I’ve tried deactivating most of our plugins to see whether there is a conflict.
   Also tried re-creating the OAuth connection – and this in itself caused the same
   error.
 * I feel that if we can sort this pseudo critical error issue first, maybe that
   will sort the main issue of the non receipt of form emails?
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Femail-test-function-causes-critical-error%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Hi [@semoliner](https://wordpress.org/support/users/semoliner/),
 * Thanks for reaching out, and I’m sorry about the error.
 * The critical error is generally caused by a malfunctioning plugin, script, or
   code that prevents WordPress from functioning correctly.
 * Have you checked the error message in the email that was sent to the admin? Usually,
   this error message will give you an idea of where the issue is coming from and
   what plugin or script may be responsible.
 * Please start by checking this out, and if it includes anything regarding WP Mail
   SMTP, please feel free to share it here and we can take a look. However, please
   be careful not to share any private or sensitive information in this public forum.
 * Thanks 🙂

 * Hi, no email gets sent to the admin. Like I said, despite receiving the error
   message, there is actually no critical error because the website is not disrupted
   at all by it. So the plugin is generating the error in error, as it were!

 * Hi [@semoliner](https://wordpress.org/support/users/semoliner/),
 * Thanks for your reply.
 * Unfortunately, we are unable to properly diagnose the issue or identify WP Mail
   SMTP as its cause if there are no actual errors accompanying the critical error
   message.
 * In case it helps, please refer to the WPBeginner’s guide here on how to troubleshoot
   the critical error message on your site:
 * [https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-the-critical-error-in-wordpress/](https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-the-critical-error-in-wordpress/)
 * And if you are able to spot any errors that identify WP Mail SMTP as the main
   cause, please feel free to share them here so we can take a look.
 * Thanks 🙂

 * Here is what I have found:
    1. While using WP Mail SMTP version 4, we did not receive any form emails via WPForms
       Lite
    2. While using WP Mail SMTP version 4, each time the Email Test was used, the critical
       error message appeared in the dashboard
    3. It’s not really a critical error at all, because it only appears in the dashboard.
       For non logged in users, the website continues to function normally. The ‘error’
       can be easily cleared simply by going back to the previous page or navigating
       to any other page in the dashboard
    4. I downgraded to WP Mail SMTP v3.11.1 and this immediately fixed both of the
       issues – the Email Test function now works properly and we are now receiving
       form emails again
    5. I then updated back to the latest version and the issue remained resolved, so
       it was most likely caused by a bad update
