 * Why do you need to do it? Think long and hard…
 * You do it under Options | Permalinks in the Administration Panel.

 * Thank you for replying,
    I think thatI need to do it so that my archive will
   show up. According to this post [http://wordpress.org/support/topic/38413](http://wordpress.org/support/topic/38413)
   I found the options/permalinks page and cut and pasted one of the lines into
   the template structure box, now I can’t see anypage, there are only error messages.
   including my homepage and my dashboard…. help?

 * Yeah, that’s why I said to think hard before you do it. I have never used custom
   permalinks and my archives work just fine. I’ve never had any luck getting them
   to work and never felt the loss.

   According to this forum, it is what I want to be doing, I think. Can you help
   me decide upon a better strategy so that I might see my archives page? thanks
   Again. Ira

 * Ah, I see what you’re saying. You don’t have to have *custom* permalinks enabled.
   The regular permalinks will work just fine. When that person wrote “link to the
   permalink” for the page they just meant the URL like you did with [http://www.iraleeanderson.com/?page_id=16](http://www.iraleeanderson.com/?page_id=16)
 * Permalinks are automatic in WordPress. It’s the Custom Permalinks that are problematic.
