• I would like to enable multisite but the codex says:

You cannot create a network in the following cases: ■ “WordPress address (URL)” is different from “Site address (URL)”.

I installed wp in its own named directory, not in the root, so does that mean I am out of luck and need to reinstall it in the root to enable multisite?

    Thanks

  • Did you read what that part actually said?

it did not say if it was in a folder.

It said if it is in a folder and you run it off the root.

mysite.com/wordpress/ <– all your files in here
    mysite.com <— your blog.

If this is what you have, then you are out of luck.

If I go to yoursite.com/whateverfolder/ and that is where you are installed and that is the home address of your blog, then YES you can install a network.

    you can’t domain map tho.

Yes, I most certainly read that. I should have specified that I was running it off the root. I installed it this way following the suggestion of a WordPress book author who indicated this was a more secure way to install WP. Alas, he did not mention that multisite would then not be possible. I wanted to be extra sure I needed to reinstall everything now, so thank you for your clarification.

AI should add that after posting here I visited your site and downloaded your ebook on multisite install, where you speak to this issue — too bad I didn’t come across that prior to the installation.

Which book? I can give the guys a heads up if it’s the one I’m thinking of.

I am writing a review of the book for Graphics.com and have the author’s email address, so I will be mentioning this to him. Thank you for your offer, however.
