# Error when changing Jetpack settings

 * (Spinoff thread as same error message appears to result from different problems)
 * Recap:
    I can’t change any Jetpack settings on my self-hosted site anarchic-teapot.
   net, and the error is always
 * > Error updating settings. SyntaxError: Unexpected token < in JSON at position
   > 0
 * Theme: Mantra
    Active plugins:
    - 404page – your smart custom 404 error page
    - Akismet Anti-Spam
    - Cookie Law Info
    - Cryout Serious Theme Settings
    - Disqus Comment System
    - FD Footnotes
    - Jetpack by WordPress.com
    - List Categories
    - Redirection
    - Special Text Boxes
    - Wordfence Security
    - WP Edit
    - WP Super Cache
    - Yoast SEO
 * All are the latest version.
 * In addition to this, although Jetpack is connected to WordPress.com, if I try
   to access plugin management there I get data retrieval errors for users & plugins
   and it is impossible to update site settings (not even site name or description)
   for both of the self-hosted sites I run or help run, even though the other site
   doesn’t generate any errors if I change Jetpack settings directly from the backend.
 * You advised me to do this:
    Open the dashboard page. Open your browser console
   Click on the Network tab Refresh the page. Try to change some of your Jetpack
   settings If you see any lines in red inside the browser console, click on them.
   A new panel should appear on the right.
 * I followed your suggestion and got as far as clicking on the red line. Bingo!

 * Thanks for all the details.

 * Could you review your Wordfence Security settings, and make sure you didn’t completely
   disable the WP REST API there? Jetpack does indeed rely on the WP REST API to
   activate and deactivate features, or to change Jetpack settings in your dashboard.
 * Let me know how it goes.

 * I had a look, and can’t find anything like that. WF has a couple of functions
   that block specific features, e.g. accessing users’ names, but disabling them
   made no difference.

 * Could you try to deactivate the plugin altogether? If you still experience issues,
   we’ll know they’re not linked to WordFence.
 * Thanks!

 * Ahead of you on that one. Unfortunately it changed nothing.

 * I get that unexpected token error as well and I’ve disabled all other plugins.

 * [@anarchic_teapot](https://wordpress.org/support/users/anarchic_teapot/) Can
   you please go ahead and try disabling all of your plugins except Jetpack. Then
   try testing again to see if the issue persists. If that resolves your issue,
   you can find what was causing it by enabling each plugin one by one while continuing
   to test.
 * Let me know how things go.

 * The problem persists.
 * I am convinced the problem lies with Jetpack. Incidentally, when I try the centralised
   site management interface on WordPress.org, it says my version of Jetpack is
   out of date (it isn’t).

 * In fact, I even get an error with wordpress.com hosted sites on that same interface,
   e.g.:
 * > There was an error retrieving users
 * Jetpack is the problem. It and Akhismet are all I have active on that blog.

 * At this point, I’d like to run some more tests with you on your site to try to
   figure out what’s happening. Could you contact us [via this contact form](http://jetpack.com/contact-support/)
   and mention this thread?

 * Er… that’s not a contact form, it’s a search form.
