• I use the free version of Mailpoet extensively, but not seen this problem before. I have posts which have text in them and featured images. When I prepare a newsletter and insert the posts normally the title appears followed by an automated excerpt from the text, a read more link and the featured image. I did not need to do anything special to make that happen. I have just edited a site and changed the template from Divi 4 to Divi 5 (By Elegant Themes). The excerpts are not automatically present, just the title, read more link and featured image.

I have a feeling that I have seen this before a long time ago, but not recently. Any clues as to what the problem is?

I checked the options for displaying the post in a newsletter. I cannot see anything wrong there, but I have never changed them in the past.

The site is very lightweight in terms of plugins.

    Hi @wingers574!

This is almost certainly caused by the switch from Divi 4 to Divi 5, and it’s not something you’ve misconfigured in MailPoet.

Here’s what’s happening: Divi 4 stored your post content using shortcodes behind the scenes. When MailPoet generated auto-excerpts, it could strip those shortcodes out and extract the readable text from your post content. Divi 5 completely changed how content is stored — it moved to a block-based format instead of shortcodes. MailPoet’s auto-excerpt generator doesn’t know how to parse this new format, so it can’t find any readable text to pull from, which is why you’re only seeing the title, read more link, and featured image.

The quickest fix is to use manual excerpts. MailPoet will always prioritize a manual excerpt over an auto-generated one. When editing a post, look for the “Excerpt” field in the post sidebar (you may need to expand it under the post settings). Whatever you type there will be used by MailPoet in your newsletter, bypassing the builder content entirely.

To confirm this is the cause, you could also try creating a quick test post using the standard WordPress block editor (not the Divi Builder) and inserting it into a newsletter — the auto-excerpt should appear as expected.

It may also be worth reporting this to Elegant Themes. Divi 5 has had several excerpt-related fixes in recent updates, so they’re aware this is a problem area. There may be a setting or update on their end that ensures the WordPress excerpt field is properly populated when saving posts built with Divi 5.

Hope that helps point you in the right direction!
