# Failed theme update

 * I’m not sure this is the right forum, but a link to here was included in an admin
   email I received for a failed theme update.
 * I have used this theme for years without any problems.
    But on the last update,
   I got this message.
 *  Unpacking the update…
    Installing the latest version… Removing the old version
   of the theme… Invalid data provided. Theme update failed.
 * Of course, with the old theme removed and not replaced by the new version, I 
   had a dead site. Unfortunately for me, the auto-update happened in the middle
   of the night, so my site was down for quite some time.
 * To ensure it doesn’t happen again, I have turned off auto-updating for the time
   being.
 * But I would like to know whether the error was caused by WordPress or by my theme
   supplier so I can investigate and resolve the issue.
 * Can you assist?

 * I am using the Colormag Pro theme. I did update the theme manually and all was
   fine.
 * I have two other sites using the same theme and there was no problem with the
   auto-update.
 * But as luck would have it, it was my main site that had the problem. 🙂
 * I’ve sent a support request to the theme developers, but I’m still waiting for
   a reply. They told me that they will need to contact their license managing system
   supplier.
 * For the moment, I’m just trying to isolate where or why it happened. But that’s
   not always as easy as it seems.

 * It sounds like it was “one of those things”… maybe there was a hiccup that caused
   a file to be incompletely replaced or some temporary issue on your server or 
   theirs. Unfortunately, it’s next to impossible to look back and find the cause.
