 * Hi, thanks for the plugin! Sorry if this has been asked before but it is not 
   clear:
 * If sending fails via the Gmail API for some reason, and no SMTP fallback is set
   up – will the plugin attempt to send the mail using WP default mail function?
   Or what happens to the email in this scenario?

 * In what you describe the email will be droped and not sent.
 * It’s a good idea to add an option to the local mail as a third option.
