‘Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home1/wpl/public_html/wp-content/themes/responsive/header.php on line 85″–when you visit site—

Hello all, this is the error i receive on my website now. I updated wordpress to a newer version and it now says this “Jetpack requires a more recent version of PHP and has been paused. Please update PHP to continue enjoying Jetpack”

I have no idea who I need to talk to for a PHP update. Previous director left and I have inherited a website that I tried to give some love and care and now it seems broken:(

At this point I just want it back to the way it was even if I have to downgrade. Many Thanks

You’ll update PHP with your hosting provider, so consult their documentation or contact their support for specifics.

Both WordPress and Jetpack require PHP 5.6.20 or higher, and recommend PHP 7.3 or higher.

As for the theme, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the /responsive/ directory to /responsive-broken/

This will force the default theme to activate and restore your site.

Next, I recommend reporting the problem at https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/theme/responsive/ so the theme’s developers and support community can help you with this.

Thanks! I got the website working but I will have to consult on the other stuff.
