Which featured images are you trying to add captions to and where would you want the captions to show up?
Which plugins have you tried so far as well?

– the feature images in posts that then appear on the home page, as well as the background image (home). This is compulsory for the images I am showing.
– the captions would show as –if possible– overlays, something not too obtrusive
– I tried: Featured Image Caption, FSM Custom Featured Image Caption, Image Source Control
It is possible, but most likely couldn’t be done with any plugins out there as it would be pretty specific. You would most likely have to write some custom code to get it to display on the theme.
Could you maybe add the attribution to the footer widget area somehow that would cover all the images without looking too bulky/out of place?

Yes, I thought so too: that the plugins couldn’t help in this case. A widget in the footer area, that would do.
Actually, you made me think: another solution is simply to overlay the pic with whatever information necessary using gimp or other. Ie handle the image outside of WP. I think that would be best? –I haven’t thought of this before… but it should not be too much trouble…
