Six questions about multisite setup (subdomains)

    I have a couple questions about the setup of a multisite network. I’ve read lots and watched many YouTube videos about this, but am still stumped on a few things.

    Here’s the setup:

    Current single site:
    Installed at example.com/wordpress
    Viewed at example.com

    Now say I turn that to multisite installation.
    And I choose the new-site-subdomain option.
    And create site1.example.com

    (1) Do I still view that original site at simply example.com, while new sites are viewed at [sitename].example.com?

    If I go to example.com/wordpress/wp-login.php and log in,
    (2) will that now be the super admin for sites?
    (3) What if I want to login as a site admin user for ONLY that original site? (as in, for users created with access to only one network site)
    (4) Would the WP admin for just site1.example.com be accessed at site1.example.com/wordpress/wp-login.php?

    Now say I have created a bunch of sites (site1.example.com, site2.example.com, site3.example.com, etc).
    I now want site2.example.com to be its own network, using the subdirectory option (so site2.example.com/siteA, site2.example.com/siteB)

    (5) Should that site2.example.com be its own WordPress multisite install then, seprate form the original example? Or is there a way to have a sort of network within a network?

    (6) Say I have a multisite network installed at subdomain.example.com.
    If its already in a subdirectory, do I still have the option to create new sites as either a subdirectory OR subdomain?

    Let me point on thing out. If you did install WordPress in its own directory, example.com/wordpress, instead of the root, example.com/, then you cannot configure WP for subdomains.

    I will answer questions as if you installed WP in the root directory to allow sub-domain config.

    1) Yes, each site will be: site1.example.com, site2.example.com, etc
    2) Dont understand your question, but the super admin is for all sites. You can also have administrators per site(s).
    3) Yes, you can have a user who is only an administrator for one site, but not for the other sites.
    4) Yes, site1.example.com/wordpress/wp-login.php or site1.example.com/wordpress/wp-admin/
    5) Not sure I understand the question fully. You can only have one WP multisite install in the root directory. It is possible to install another multisite in a sub-directory. But again, installing WP in its own (sub)directory will not all subdomain configuration.
    6) Yes, you can still create subdomains using the Domain mapping plugin – http://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/

    Ahh, now that helps out. I didn’t know you can’t install WP in its own directory and then not have subdomains. That’s a shame.

    As for those couple tricky ones, I’ll try to explain a bit more.

    1) Say I have a regular, single WP site at example.com. Then I turn it into a multisite network. So now I have example.com, and site1.example.com, site2.example.com, etc.

    The original single WP site I had at example.com….how do I access the WP administration for just that one particular site. It seems if I go to example.com/wp-login.php (as I did before the conversion), I’d then access the super admin for all sites. Or, once I convert to multisite. do I have to assign that original site to a subdomain, like original.example.com?

    2) I was thinking…what if I have site1.example.com, site2.example.com, site3.example.com as apart of a multisite network. Then on site2 I decide I’d like a bunch of related sites to it, another network–could I launch a network within a network? But it seems like the answer is no, and that I should then install a new, fresh multisite network at the domain site2.example.com and run with that.

    The original site that you install WP is the main site. It is just another site. There is no “super admin” site. All sites are the same. There are super users, which are privileged users for all sites.

    > There is no way to have a network within a network. And just to clarify, with WP multisite, all the sites are completely separate. If you want to have related content, then multisite might not be the solution. Also I mentioned that you can have multiple WP multisites installed. For example you could have these two WP sites with the following site urls on one server:
    1) sports.com, basketball.sports.com, soccer.sports.com
    2) sports.com/basketball/nba, sports.com/basketball/ncaa

    Oh okay, so once any admin logs in to any site, he/she has access to the entire network of sites (unless otherwise specified).

    Also, as far as installing WP Multisite in its own directory, are you sure that doesn’t work? It looks like as of version 3.5, Multisite supports that sort of setup.

    That’s not exactly correct… If you install WP in example.com/wordpress, but it runs out of example.com then you can use subdomains 🙂 So he has this:

    Current single site:
    Installed at example.com/wordpress
    Viewed at example.com

    That SHOULD work.
