Garamond? Woe betide! True?

For my site (a pedantic guide of Berlin driven by historical knowledge) Garamond would be a very good font. BUT. Notwithstanding the fact that it is classified as a “web-safe-font” (a concept that I was warned is no more in fashion) and, notwithstanding the fact that Google Fonts honors it with the title of variable font, I found an article warning that it doesn’t always render well, especially in smartphones.
I hope to find someone to tell me that I shouldn’t mind, Garamond having proven its worth.
But of course, I would appreciate the honesty of someone telling the truth, if it is the truth, that he who lives by the Garamond dies by the Garamond.
