get all attachments from category

hello and thanks for the help!

i’m trying to get all attachments(images) from one category of posts at a time, so i can choose a random image to display that on my page.
the problem is that it is rather complicated to do that with wordpress built in functions.

if its possible to do that outside the loop perfect, if not , no problem.
