 * I tried to update Google Analytics for WordPress. **the update failed**. I saw
   a message: **unable to move file to upgrade-temp-backup**. Then on the admin
   plugins page I saw a Message: **Google analytics plugin was deactivated because
   the plugin could not be found.** The plugin is actually in the wp-content/plugins
   directory with the previous date.
 * Questions: 1. what caused the error? 2. How can I get the plugin back? 3. How
   can I do a successful update. thanks
 * I have a backup file but my updraft plus restore previously wiped out my entire
   plugins directory so I can not simply do a restore. 🙁
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fgoogle-analytics-update-failed%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Hi [@hmabpera](https://wordpress.org/support/users/hmabpera/),
 * Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry for the trouble here.
 * The error message “unable to move file to upgrade-temp-backup” in WordPress usually
   indicates an issue related to file permissions during the plugin update process.
   The correct file permissions for directories are typically `755`, and for files,
   it’s often `644`.
 * Please try adjusting file permissions to see if that fixes the issue. Here’s
   a guide you can follow: [https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-fix-file-and-folder-permissions-error-in-wordpress/](https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-fix-file-and-folder-permissions-error-in-wordpress/)
 * As a workaround, you should be able to manually update your plugins by directly
   downloading the latest version and uploading it manually to your WordPress site,
   replacing the older version that way.
 * You may need to re-install MonsterInsights Lite if it’s been deactivated and
   is no longer available in your Plugins page.
 * If you have any issues with re-installation, you can try removing the folder
   manually from your site first. Here’s a guide you can follow: [https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-destination-folder-already-exists-error-in-wordpress/](https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-destination-folder-already-exists-error-in-wordpress/)
 * If issues persist, please reach out to your host provider, as they’ll have the
   expertise to help with the above.
 * In case you’d like to learn more about the upgrade-temp-backup folder, you can
   check out WordPress’s article here: [https://make.wordpress.org/core/2023/07/11/new-in-6-3-rollback-for-failed-manual-plugin-and-theme-updates/](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2023/07/11/new-in-6-3-rollback-for-failed-manual-plugin-and-theme-updates/)
 * I hope this helps, but let me know if you have further questions.
 * Thank you!

 * Thanks, Michelle. I backed up my plugins before a failed update. When I tried
   to restore this backup using UpdraftPlus, I lost all of the plugins.
   I restored
   them by downloading the backup zip file and actually cp-ing its plugin folders
   to wp-content/plugins. these function properly BUT I cannot execute any updates
   to these.
 * The permissions seem to be correct 775 or 755 for folders and 664 or 644 for
   files. we changed the owner of the plugin sub-folders and files to daemon. this
   allowed one successful update for each plugin but no subsequent ones.
 * Files were left in the upgrade-temp-backup folder after successful updates. According
   to the documentation they should have been removed at that time.

 * Hi [@hmabpera](https://wordpress.org/support/users/hmabpera/),
 * Thanks for sharing those details.
 * It sounds like you may have already attempted similar troubleshooting steps as
   suggested in this WordPress thread regarding the plugin update issue: [https://wordpress.org/support/topic/unable-to-update-plugins-after-upgrade-to-v6-3/](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/unable-to-update-plugins-after-upgrade-to-v6-3/)
 * Since this seems to be affecting more than just MonsterInsights, I’m afraid our
   expertise on this topic is limited.
 * Would you be able to reach out to your host provider for further assistance?
   They’ll be more equipped to investigate your server configuration or WordPress
   installation, and have the expertise to identify and fix any underlying problems.
 * I’m so sorry for not being able to help more, but let me know if you have any
   further questions about MonsterInsights or Google Analytics.
 * Thank you.
