 * It’s a file (sometimes hidden from FTP software by default) that contains server
instructions. In WordPress, you need an .htaccess file in your main (root) WordPress
folder to use custom (pretty) permalinks. If you’re having problems locating
an .htaccess file in your main site folder, then you may need to ask your hosts
   for assistance.

 * I’m sorry to hear that. They don’t sound like good hosts. 🙁
 * Unfortunately there’s a limit to the help we can give here, so you may need to
consider [hiring someone](http://jobs.wordpress.net/) to carry out some troubleshooting
   for you.
