I ended up restoring the theme from a previous backup. After clicking on “Ugrade Theme Header” the header appeared two times and the footer was gone. After changing sydney-update-header to value 0 the old header appeared. I then changed the theme to 2021 aand then back to Sydney. Upgrade Theme Header again made the header appear two times. Your experience was exactly the same as mine. I had to manually reinstate the footers and have left “sydney-update-header” as 0.
