 * I am trying to set up a WordPress network (for the first time) using the sub-
   domains method. I am on hostmonster and have created the wildcard sub-domain
   in cPanel.
    I can create a new site in the network admin as well as from the
   front end at /wp-signup.php and I am receiving the activation emails. When I
   try to visit a site I have created it gives a Hostmonster 404 (not a 404 from
   my theme). When I try to visit the dashboard of one of the sites it re-directs
   to my other domain that is using the same hosting.
 * I have contacted hostmonster and they very helpfully told me that they can’t
   assist me with a WordPress problem. But I don’t think it is a WordPress problem.

   I have the .htaccess file and the wp-config.php set up as per the instructions
   under network setup. I’m not sure what I can check next. Any help is appreciated!
 * Thanks

 * Wildcard subdomains only work when you use the MAIN domain on your hosting account.
 * This is an issue with the host. Normally, they do not set up wildcard subs for
   every domain you add.
 * tl:dr – you;re out of luck, make it a subfolder install or move it.

 * You’re an absolute gun Andrea! Changing to subfolders worked perfectly.
 * Here’s a link with instructions for anybody else needing this.

 * I thought I’d chime in here in case someone else has the problem I was having.
   On hostmonster, I set up the wildcard subdomain for WordPress Multisite. I thought
   I’d set it up accurately, however, what I discovered was that when you create
   a wildcard subdomain on hostmonster, it automatically creates a folder called**
   _wildcard_**. You’ll want to delete that from the field next to /public_html/.
   If you don’t, you’ll get a hostmonster placeholder page on your subdomain and
   you’ll get an Internal Server Error message when trying to access /wp-login.php
   or /wp-admin
 * I hope this helps some people. Fortunately, it’s only cost me a few minutes of
   time to figure out.

 * One more note on what I mentioned above… If you have already created the wildcard
   subdomain and it included the **_wildcard_** folder – ie /public_html/**_wildcard_**–
   then you’ll have to delete that subdomain and create a new one without the wildcard
   in the field next to /public_html/.

 * Thanks for the info.
 * For the record, your WordPress multisite is working well on Hostmonster?
 * I have one on Network Solutions Shared (ugh) that isn’t working so well and I’m
   looking for a host to move it to.

 * [@paulcham](https://wordpress.org/support/users/paulcham/) – Yes. once I got
   all of that sorted out, the multisite is running great on Hostmonster. I’ve read
   several bits of info about not running a WP Multisite installation on shared
   hosting. I’d say that’s really dependent on how the multisite is used. I’m mainly
   using it for clients to have a dedicated online store site, ie, store.battlefieldministries.
   org to sort of separate their main site from their e-Commerce.
 * Seems to work fine on shared hosting in this scenario but for the most part in
   instances like this, the addition of the store subdomain doesn’t necessarily
   cause a huge increase in traffic.
 * If traffic increases exponentially with each subdomain or subdirectory added,
   then it’s definitely not a good idea to be on shared hosting.
 * Good luck with your site and potential move. How do you plan on moving your network?
   I haven’t used it in a while but I’ve heard good things about Backup Buddy.

 * [@skeggsjp](https://wordpress.org/support/users/skeggsjp/) – Thanks for the info.
   Fortunately, my multisite is a small, low traffic affair so I’m not too worried
   about shared hosting. And, also fortunately, I was just testing the multisite
   install on the client’s existing NetSol hosting so I don’t actually have to migrate
   anything. Which is great because I’ve heard a few horror stories!
 * Good to know about Backup Buddy though. Thanks!

 * paulcham – FYI we can’t suggest hosts to use here, since it becomes a big he
   said/she said mess.
