how to modify "edit post" format drop-down

this drop-down menu forces you to choose a format for your post and/or page, and depending on what format you choose it wraps corresponding code around your post. this is breaking my scripts and i need to remove it, or at the very least add a new format type that does not wrap the contents of the entry with superfluous code.

this is not the style drop-down. it’s the drop-down on the far left of the edit window in visual mode that contains choices like paragraph, heading 1, heading 2, etc.
