How to use Gallery shortcode

I want to streamline the upload of certain document files to my media library and get them to appear in descending order on a page as an index listing of such documents showing only the title and having the title hyperlinked i the actual document.
1) I want to upload PDFs to the media library
2) I want to use the [gallery] shortcode, if possible, to list all PDF’s on a page as follows:
- The Title of my PDF uploaded on 8/31/2018
- The Title of my PDF uploaded on 8/29/2018
- The Title of my PDF uploaded on 8/37/2018
- etc. …
Does the [gallery] shortcode work that way? I can’t seem to figure out how exactly to make this happen.

It doesn’t handle other media types.
Ok, thanks @joyously. That is what I needed to know.
Any ideas on how to make this happen? Is there a solid plugin that does this? Or do I need to write my own function?
