 * I’m looking through various installs of WordPress that I set up, and using my
favorite ftp client, I can see some installs have .htaccess files and some don’t.
 * The first question is probably not that important, but, how’d that happen?
 * The second question is what if I just copy another .htaccess file and then replace
the domain name from the original with the domain name of the site I’m copying
   it to?
 * (As I always do before posting here, I searched through the forums for this problem,
and while there are many questions/answers, none appear like the one I have.
If the solution is here and I’ve missed it, I’m sorry, but would you point to
   it?)

 * .htaccess holds the permalinks settings and may have more content depending on
   the host/web server setup.
In my opinion, not a good idea to swap it with one
   from different server.
 * If its missing and WP works right – it’s not needed. If you need to recreate
it, reset the permalinks to the same value. If there are write errors, create
an empty one with your ftp program, set permissions to 666 and try again. When
   done, set permissions to 644.

 * The reason i found it was missing was I was trying to figure out why my blog
keeps switching from the theme I made to the default theme. I’ve found a post
elsewhere in the forums that suggests my problem is that I’ve got a bad stylesheet,
so now I’m looking that over to see if I can find a problem there. (In all the
time I’ve been working with WordPress, I’ve never had this problem before.)
