 * Hi,
 * On our website we use old style HTML:
 * Error: Almost standards mode doctype. Expected <!DOCTYPE html>.
    From line 1,
   column 1; to line 1, column 121 <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
   Transitional//EN” “[http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”&gt](http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”&gt);
 * How can we change it to html5?
 * Please advise,
    Sandra

 * Thanks for the link.
 * I am not so technical person, but where this html comes from?
    We use latest
   version of WP – 4.9.4
 * Do we need to update something?
 * Please advise,
    Sandra

 * > where this html comes from?
 * Could be from you theme (theme’s header.php, index.php, etc.).
 * > Do we need to update something?
 * Since you are using a custom or commercial theme – `lloydmats`:
    – you may have
   to go back to your developer team and ask them to make the necessary change(s)
   to the theme. – For pro or commercial product support please contact the author
   directly on their site. They cannot support their customers here. – As the author
   is aware, commercial products are [not supported in these forums](https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/forum-welcome/#do-not-post-about-commercial-products).
   As you are their customer I am sure they will have no problem supporting you
   there. Also, forum volunteers are not given access to commercial products, so
   they would not know why your commercial theme or plugin is not working properly.

 * If you want to fix it yourself:
    – First establish a child theme, otherwise your
   changes will get lost in an update, details on creating a child theme here: [http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)–
   The DOCTYPE element absolutely comes from the theme, most usually from a single
   file that is included into every page template, it is conventionally called “
   header.php”, BUT these are just common conventions and could be different.
 * Once you are done, suggest that you verify your site for html and css compliance,
   it is nice to have but not mandatory. Details here:
    [http://validator.w3.org/](http://validator.w3.org/)
   [http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/](http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/)
