 * WP Smush is more or less consistently throwing HTTP errors when uploading images
   to the media library. Unless the file that is being uploaded is fairly small (
   smaller than or close to some of the sizes that WP Smush is supposed to optimize
   to) it fails to upload.
 * I should add that I am publishing posts to Apple News as well, so there are likely
   more image formats being created than the average WordPress install.
 * I imagine that this might be a timeout issue. Is there a timing option in functions.
   php that can be modified to give it more time to process?

 * Hi [@ucallrt](https://wordpress.org/support/users/ucallrt/),
 * Hope you’re well 🙂
 * I’ve tested this on my installation with some large images (around 5MB) but I
   was unable to see any similar errors, could you post entire error error here
   and perhaps grab a screenshot so we can better understand what you’re seeing?
 * You could try increasing maximum execution time by following the instructions
   from here:
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/Common_WordPress_Errors#Maximum_execution_time_exceeded](http://codex.wordpress.org/Common_WordPress_Errors#Maximum_execution_time_exceeded)
 * Cheers,

 * The images in question that I was trying to add were 11.1 and 12.3 MB in size.

 * Thank you for your response. The free version of Smush only compresses images
   up to 1mb. To compress images that large you would need to upgrade. We have a
   [free trial period](https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wp-smush-pro/) so you
   could Smush those larger images and then go back to using the free version and
   still keep the compressed images. I hope this helps.
