I have never tried doing it that way to be honest. I’m not near a computer now so I can’t test but I can try it out once I get back.
What I usually do is simply type in /popular and WordPress should auto-suggest the WordPress Popular Posts block right away. Pick that and the block is inserted automatically for you into the post / page / sidebar.
Typing /popular inserted the WordPress Popular Posts block editor stuff! It can be used as it is for posted articles and fixed articles, but it seems that it is necessary to copy the code to display it in the sidebar widget.
