I had a critical problem notice on a client website this morning (plugin needed an update). All seemed normal in the body of the email but the subject line showed the domain name of a completely unrelated website. Is there a known and safe explanation for this?

Looking at a DIG search, both had the same IPv4 address in their A record. Unsurprising on Amazon Lightsail hosting I suppose.

I don’t really want to disclose the site on a public forum.

Hi @bncpeter, thanks for reaching out!

We’d be happy to look into it further if necessary, although the email is highly likely to be legitimate if the results you saw in relation to this scan result/plugin after logging in match the contents of the email.

Wordfence takes the domain from your WordPress site_url() or network_site_url() (on multisite) values. It’s very uncommon for us to see, but another plugin that modifies those values could affect them.

Using the WordPress site_url and site_home constants for the domain in your wp-config.php file should fix it if that is the case. You can also ensure “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)” are set in WordPress > Settings > General.

This page explains both in more detail (even though you’re not performing a migration): http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Changing_The_Site_URL

Let us know how you get on,
    Peter.
