Then it gives you a choice of methods to verify ownership of the website. The easiest for me to understand was add a meta tag. I clicked on that, then next and it gave me a long tag and told me to add it to the portion of my site, which in WordPress is in the header.php. Then I selected the code and paste it as plain text and it worked. I don’t know if this might help you but it helped me and I did nothing else, other then copy and paste the code.
