Index.php – permalinks

I cannot find any solution to removing the index.php from my permalinks structure? I’m on an Apache server and have added a .htaccess file saved-as “all files” and still it returns a “404” not found error when I remove the index.php from the string. http://rentals-oahu.com running a child theme. Permalink structure /%postname%/
Help please!
