 * Hi, I followed the MAMP installation instruction at:
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP](http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP)
 * I followed the instructions and created the wordpress folder at Mac Users>username
   >Sites>wordpress, copied the wordpress files to it out of the zip download and
   then tried to use localhost:8888/wordpress to start the installation.
 * Nothing happened. Error 404
    ‘Not Found The requested URL /wordpress was not
   found on this server.’
 * Am I being a dimwit? Tried putting in the exact root directory structure as the
   URL (localhost:8888/Users>username>Sites>wordpress) and that still did not work.
 * Thanks for any help.

 * Hi feromone,
 * Did you also set the ‘Document Root’ inside of MAMP?
 * 1. Open MAMP.
    2. Select ‘Preferences’. 3. Under the ‘Apache’ tab, make sure
   the ‘Document Root’ follows the structure that you mentioned above.
 * Let me know if that helps.

 * I agree with rwaynick.
 * [@feromone](https://wordpress.org/support/users/feromone/), FYI, the default
   Document Root is Applications -> MAMP -> htdocs.

 * Hi, thanks. I had set the Apache document root as Users/username/Sites/wordpress
   and this makes no difference. Should I just set it to Applications>MAMP>htdocs
   and have done with it?

 * Yes, as long as the folders for the WordPress install is in the htdocs folder.

 * Caved in and put it in htdocs. Problem solved. So much for customisation.
