 * I’m using the current version of WF on one of my sites, which recently became
unavailable, just showing an ‘An Internal Server Error Has Occurred’ message.
I contacted my ISP and they said:
 * “We have become aware of reports of problems with a WordPress plugin called WordFence.
The some versions of this plugin are causing web sites created with WordPress
to not display and show 500 internal server error page.
    To prevent this, you
would have to disable the plugin via the FTP (/website/wp-content/plugins). If
you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our support
   team.”
 * Are they right? I find WF very useful and would not wish to deactivate it unless
   absolutely necessary.

 * Hi [@michael-walker](https://wordpress.org/support/users/michael-walker/),
 * This could be due to inappropriate settings for the [firewall optimization](https://docs.wordfence.com/en/Web_Application_Firewall_Setup).
 * To regain access to the site, please follow [these steps](https://docs.wordfence.com/en/Web_Application_Firewall_Setup)
in order to manually remove the firewall setup.
 * Before you attempt again to carry out the optimization procedure, make sure your
environment meets all the [Wordfence system requirements](https://docs.wordfence.com/en/Wordfence_system_requirements).
 * Also, in order to know which option is the most appropriate to your environment:
    - Go to the _Wordfence Tools_ page
    - Click the _Diagnostics_ tab
    - In the _Other Tests_ section, click the link that reads _“Click to view your
system’s configuration in a new window”_
 * Check the value associated with the “_Server API_” parameter and make sure it
is consistent with the option selected for the firewall optimization setup.

 * Thanks for the prompt reply – that did fix it.
