# Issue with unicode filter names

 * I’m using unicode (Chinese characters) for filter names. Everything worked fine
   when I created a new gallery and assigned filters to images. However, when I
   tried to edit the galley, all the filters were detached from the images. It seems
   this only happens when unicode is used in filter names. Could this be fixed or
   is there a workaround? Thank you!

 * Hi [@jackpwang](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jackpwang/),
 * Can you share the exact words you use on filters?
 * I will try the same on local for creating filters.
 * If there is any use case then I will guide you.
 * Thanks for using the plugin.
 * Thanks

 * Hi [@farazfrank](https://wordpress.org/support/users/farazfrank/),
 * I’m using names like 欧洲美食 and 亚洲美食 on filters. It works when you add
   a gallery with filters. But when you try to edit the gallery, all the filters
   are gone.
 * Thanks,
    Jack

 * Hello again,
 * I’m not sure if the issue is caused by Unicode as slugs. If so, I’m happy to
   use English names for slugs (as long as I can use Unicode for filter names) if
   you can provide the option to enter both filter name and slug in the settings.
 * Thanks,
    Jack

 * Hi [@jackpwang](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jackpwang/),
    As to make
   sure the plugin does not conflict with old names it is made like this. So whenever
   there is a change in the filter name and their respective categories you have
   to reassign them to respective images again in the gallery.
 * as per your language concern, we have tested again using the same filter names
   as you provide it’s working fine so go ahead you can use them.
 * Also, the gallery is dependent on user-assigned filter names this is the best
   feasible approach to serve and differentiate likewise. Switching to slugs will
   result in unrecognizable problems whenever you modify your permalinks.

 * Hi [@farazfrank](https://wordpress.org/support/users/farazfrank/),
 * I tried again and the problem still exits. Here are the steps to reproduce it:
 * 1. Create a galley and add a few filters using Unicode (e.g. 欧洲美食 and 亚洲
   美食).
    2. Click on the “Gallery” button, upload some images and apply filters,
   then click on the “Save” button (When I look at the page using the shortcode,
   it works perfectly. The problem occurs when you try to make changes – see next
   step below) 3. Let’s see I want to add a few more images and apply filters. When
   I click on the “Gallery” button again, all the filters attached to existing images
   are gone. I expect the image-filter relationship to existing images are retained
   and I only need to assign filters to new images. Please note I’m not changing
   any filters, only adding new images. My testing shows this problem only occurs
   if Unicode is used in filter names.
 * If I only have a few images, this is not a big deal. However, if I have a lot
   of images, each time I have new images to add, I have to re-assign filters to
   all the existing images that I already did before which is very inconvenient.
   Hope you can fix it.
 * Thank you,
    Jack

 * Just wanted to add a note to my previous message: in order to reproduce the issue
   correctly, between step 2 and step3 you need to exit the browser and open it
   again (or at least click on the “Filters” button after step 2 then click on the“
   Gallery” button again). The idea is to get a new session. Thanks!

 * Hi [@jackpwang](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jackpwang/),
    This problem
   only occurs whenever you forget to press the save button after making any changes
   at any step and directly switch back to the previous step. Make sure to save
   changes. and for Unicode, we will go through a deep testing phase again especially
   for particular Chinese ones, and will inform you ASAP. Thanks.

 * Hi [@jackpwang](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jackpwang/),
    Until we release
   an update with Unicode text support there is a workaround for you. To use your
   text as a filter you have to make it Unicode-free and to do this follow these
   steps. 1. Go to [https://translate.google.com/](https://translate.google.com/)
   then 2. Type the text in English (for example ‘European dishes’) and select translation
   language Chinese simplified to another side. ( for our ‘European dishes’ result
   will be “欧洲菜”) 3. Now press the “Copy Translation” button. 4. Now paste this
   copied Chinese text to plugins “Filter Name”. Example Screenshot: [https://prnt.sc/26k2gnw](https://prnt.sc/26k2gnw)
 * Doing like this all your Chinese filter names will be displayed below every image
   whenever you edit your gallery. You don’t have to re-assign them every edit.

   Working Screenshot: [https://prnt.sc/26k2q27](https://prnt.sc/26k2q27) Thanks.

 * Hi [@farazfrank](https://wordpress.org/support/users/farazfrank/),
 * I can confirm that the workaround works. It depends on Google Translate correctly
   translating to the desirable phrases which is not always the case. Hope you can
   release the Unicode support soon.
 * Also, when I click on the image tile in the web page that uses the plugin, it
   goes to the same page in a new tab which is weird. Can you make it to show the
   lightbox (same as when clicking on the image itself) or simply make the image
   title non-clickable?
 * Thanks!

 * Hi [@jackpwang](https://wordpress.org/support/users/jackpwang/),
 * Title issue fixed in the new version.
 * And found the Unicode problem too, and working on a good solution on that. The
   problem is very complex.
 * Thanks for all the great feedback on the plugin.
