 * I have been advised to learn JQuery (and whatever else I need to be familiar 
   with: HTML, etc.).
 * Does anyone have any recommendations for a free online training course / manual,
   etc.? I’d hate to choose one myself and spend a month learning gibberish…

   which based on your HTML recommendation is probably a good place to learn it).

 * You don’t have to, what exactly do you want to learn with jQuery? If you just
   want to learn what the library can do then you only really need to understand
   the syntax of JavaScript.

 * Cheers Andrew. I’m not sure exactly. I’m doing a lot of changes on my website(
   www.learnandspeakenglish.co.uk) and I’m getting most of my help from a friend.
   She suggested I learn JQuery, but I didn’t ask why – I just figured I’d look 
   for and start a course and then I’d find out 🙂
