Linking posts to the same category

Hi there, I have a question regarding categories.
Is it possible to assign, for example, portfolio and blog posts to the same category? I can’t seem to find a way of doing it. I know I can create categories for both portfolio and blog posts separately but can I create a category that would be a parent to both?
Sorry if it sounds confusing, tried to explain it as best I could.
