Local Pickup not displaying in method selection

Hi everyone, I’m trying to disable shipping and just offer local pickup. I see the option to do so, and I set up a pickup location which does show up at checkout, but when I try to edit the shipping options to remove shipping and only offer pickup, it’s not available. Why is that? I was told by a representative at WooCommerce that this is possible and should be a simple, built-in step, which I see that it is, but for some reason I cannot select it. My business does not ship anything, and I don’t want customers to even see that option and think it’s a possibility.

Perhaps there is a workaround to make the products themselves available for pickup only? That way there’s no need for the checkout to try and pull options?

@ckadenge I’ve tried those exact steps, it doesn’t show up like that for me. Even though I have a location added, it’s not selectable when I try to use is as a shipping/pickup method. It keeps telling me to set up a local pickup method, and I know it’s set up correctly because I see it at checkout. It just won’t let me use it without shipping.

I found a different way to bypass shipping, it should work until I can figure out how to get the pickup method to show by itself.

To bypass the issue, I added a block on the product page template to let visitors know we only offer pickup.

Then when they get to checkout, they’ll see another block that I added to the checkout template reiterating this fact.

I had to make all products “virtual” so the system wouldn’t try to pull shipping. On this next screenshot, you’ll see how I have already set up a pickup location and enabled it. It even shows up at checkout, but ONLY beside the shipping option, not alone. It is not selectable as a sole option, as you can see in the next screenshot, although other screenshots I’ve seen on WooCommerce support instructions show it as a selectable option.

Hi @tipsyhues

To clarify, is this a different requirement because we dealt with a similar shipping issue earlier in your other thread? Do you want only to show the local pickup option and not any other? However, remember that if you hide the shipping option, the local pickup will also be hidden as it’s a shipping method.

The most effective solution could be to categorize your items as virtual products. This completely hides the shipping option; you can notify your customers that you won’t be shipping anything. Alternatively, remove all other shipping methods and activate only the local pickup option.

@shameemreza I’ve always wanted to show local pickup but not shipping. I’m already using the virtual option with messaging saying pickup only, but @carolm29 is trying to troubleshoot why the pickup option is not working by itself. Showing the pickup option would be ideal because people don’t always purchase products, as we mostly do events, so displaying a permanent pickup message when most customers won’t require it does work, but it’s not the ideal solution. Additionally, there is one product (physical gift cards) that would be mailed from the corporate location only, but with this workaround, the shipping option would show along with the conflicting pickup only messaging.

One possible solution is to use a shipping class. You can create a shipping class for your gift cards and assign a shipping method to it. This way, the shipping option would only appear for products within this shipping class, while the local pickup option would remain available for all products.

@shameemreza I’ve tried the classes too. If they worked, I wouldn’t have had to use the workaround. The problem is, I don’t know why I cannot select pickup as a sole shipping method when that solution is clearly available to everyone else. If I changed it to this way that your recommending now, the other products still wouldn’t show as available for pickup because I had to mark them as virtual to eliminate shipping, and virtual items don’t require either method. Basically, it’s like I’ve got a defective version of WooCommerce. It’s supposed to do something and it’s not, and the representatives don’t know why.
