Main multisite 404 not redirecting

    I have 2 sites setup in my multisite install:

    mainsite.net
    subdomain.mainsite.net

    Both are using the twentyeleven theme and have 0 plugins active/installed. Permalinks are working on both sites, and are set to /%postname%/

    On subdomain.mainsite.net if I put in an invalid url (subdomain.mainsite.net/bad_url), I get the 404 page, but if I do the same on mainsite.net the page doesn’t resolve:

    Firefox Error
    The page isn’t redirecting properly
    Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

    I’ve seen many posts where people are having relatively similar problems, but have yet to find the correct solution to my problem.
