    Hello everyone,

I have 2 linked questions for you!

    1. I read somewhere that it’s advised to have the master site in maintenance mode and to use only subsites for security reasons, is this a legend or is it true?

    2. The problem I’m facing with this idea is that my main domain “blabla.com” (which points to public_html in root directory of my host) should therefore be a subsite and not the master site.

So my idea was to add a new domain (bling.com) to be the master multisite in a folder called “multisite” next to public_html in the root dir of my host, but I don’t know how (and if it’s possible) to set the main domain “blabla.com” as a subsite of that network since I can’t change the document root in cpanel for that domain (since it’s the root domain).

If having the master site in maintenance is not a good idea, then I will use “blabla.com” in public_html to be the master site (ID1) but I would love to know your point of view on this before 🙂

    (I hope I’m clear enough ^^)
Thank you for reading and helping!

Likely a legend. And, like all legends, has a tiny strand of truth.

I’m curious if you could provide the address of this “somewhere” that you read this 😀

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by “maintenance”. But note that in multisite, it’s just one WordPress installation. So if the primary site breaks, the entire network — along with all subsites — is likely to go down as well.

The bigger question though is… do you really need multisite? And do you really have what it takes to manage a multisite network?

    Hey George,

    Thank you for your answer!

I read so much on multisite lately that I can’t find the source of that information sorry..

By “maintenance”, the article emphasized that the ID1 site should remain private and not be open for registration or login, except for the super administrator.

Honestly, it suits me if this is not a good idea, because I can clearly see how to create the multisite from my root domain 🙂

edit: to answer your evolving question:
How do I know if I have what it takes if I don’t try? 😉

I don’t intend to make a big multisite network though, I run about 10 separate sites sharing the same custom post types and users at the moment, and I’d like to improve their separate languages by avoiding additional plugins, multisite seems like a no-brainer for my use.

There’s no technical or security basis for this recommendation.
