Menu gets corrupted
-
this is an odd one and I thought it was theme-based but is happening with other themes from different vendors.
Basically, when saving a menu three things happen:
1. the location gets cleared
2. the last item in the menu is changed from ‘page’ to ‘custom’
3. if the last item is a sub-menu it is moved to top levelI have created a new menu in case the old one was corrupted but the problem remains.
I have reinstalled WP 4.1.1 to no avail and have been deactivating plugins in case the problem is there but nothing seems to fix it.
Please help.
Steve.

have you tried:
– Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches.
– If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the unedited default Twenty Fifteen theme for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
– resetting the plugins foldervia FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.Tara,
Thanks for replying.
I flushed all caches to no avail. I then switched to 2012 theme (it more closely matches my layout) and all was well!
I’ve built a new menu and all seems to be good.
I then applied my bought themes and BAM! the problem returned.
Switching back to 2012 and all is good.
The two purchased themes are from different vendors but exhibit the same problem.
Oddly, one of the themes is currently running okay on another site that I manage.
Steve.

– It suggests your commercial themes are broken or not compatible with your WP installation.
– Now at least you know the issue.
– you want to contact the vendors of your commercial theme if you still intend to use one of them. Thanks Tara. Will do.
Steve.
u r welcome 🙂
Well, I guess I was a little premature.
As I expanded the menu the problem returned, even with 2012 theme and all but key plugins deactivated.
what I have found, and can be seen on my site is that the last menu item (‘News’) is not actually a link. There is a hover state but no link.
This is created with the standard menu tool in WP4.1.1
Any thoughts?
Anyone?
Looks like you might be hitting a server limitation that can affect the number of menu items – see:
http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-the-custom-menu-items-limit-in-wordpress/
Tried everything but could not identify the problem.
Today I deleted all the menus from the system and recreated the menu I wanted, testing link-by-link. The menu now works correctly so there must have been some corruption in a menu file.
