Modify Single.php or just make a post template?

I am developing a theme with posts with a LOT of custom fields data. But I just can’t get it to work when I use this file as single.php. If I am using it as a template (and embeds this template to a clean single.php with the plugin post templates) it works. Is it a good idea NOT to make this template as a default single post template??
