 * Hello
 * I am new to WordPress so please forgive any mistakes in etiquette or language
   miss-use. I have setup a multi-site and redirected the sites domain name to the
   sub-directory.
 * So when you type in the URL [http://www.SpiritRockMorgan.com](http://www.SpiritRockMorgan.com)
   it goes to the correct directory but the URL dynamically changes back to [http://www.thedigitalhorse.club/SpiritRockMorgans/](http://www.thedigitalhorse.club/SpiritRockMorgans/)
   in the browser.
 * In my attempt to correct this I used the WordPress MU Domain Mapping
    domain.
   Version 0.5.5.1.
 * I installed it first manually as per the excellent tutorial provided at [http://ottopress.com/2010/wordpress-3-0-multisite-domain-mapping-tutorial/](http://ottopress.com/2010/wordpress-3-0-multisite-domain-mapping-tutorial/)
   but I was never able to login as the SUPER Admin and find the Super Admin->Domain
   Mapping menu.
 * Then I circled back and tried to install it via upload the plugin>Add New following
   these instructions
 * Install the plugin in the usual way into the regular WordPress plugins folder.
   Network activate the plugin.
    Move sunrise.php into wp-content/. If there is
   a sunrise.php there already, you’ll just have to merge them as best you can.
   Edit wp-config.php and uncomment or add the SUNRISE definition line. If it does
   not exist please ensure it’s on the line above the last “require_once” command.
   define( ‘SUNRISE’, ‘on’ ); As a “super admin”, visit Super Admin->Domain Mapping
   to create the domain mapping database table and set the server IP address or
   a domain to point CNAME records at. Make sure the default Apache virtual host
   points at your WordPress MU site or WordPress 3.0 network so it will handle unknown
   domains correctly. On some hosts you may be required to get a dedicated IP address.
   A quick check: in a web broswer, type in the IP address of your install. If you
   are using CPanel, use the Park a Domain menu to set the mapped domain to your
   main installtion. Do not define COOKIE_DOMAIN in your wp-config.php as it conflicts
   with logins on your mapped domains.
 * But still now Domain Mapping menu.
 * Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
 * Kind regards
 * Robin

 * I think you did something wrong in the installation. When you install WP in a
   root directory the site will be installed on the root host, [http://site.domain.com/](http://site.domain.com/)
 * If you want to install WP in a subdirectory or have a subdirectory in the site,
   e.g. [http://site.domain.com/subdir](http://site.domain.com/subdir), then you
   have to do some special stuff while installing WP. You cannot just move WP directory
   around and add redirect rules in the web server.

 * Hi thank you I just got an email from Otto and he said that the install instructions
   on his site where dated. So I backed out of everything and just did the normal
   instal as per the Plugin>AddNew and now I have the menu option which is under
   Settings> but when I activate the plugin for the network and try to go to the
   sub-directory I get the following message
 * “The domain mapping plugin only works if the site is installed in /. This is
   a limitation of how virtual servers work and is very difficult to work around.”
 * Hummmm thanks for any help and thank you jk

 * That is correct, the Domain Mapping plugin will not work when you install WP
   in a subdirectory, e.g. [http://site.domain.com/subdir](http://site.domain.com/subdir)

 * So when I installed it I installed it in as the Super Admin not in the specific
   site, so now I am confused.
 * So I logged in as Super Admin for the Network and I have it uploaded and installed
   in the Network plugins. But when I activate it I get the
    message.
 * “The domain mapping plugin only works if the site is installed in /. This is
   a limitation of how virtual servers work and is very difficult to work around.”
 * So where did I go wrong?
 * thanks
