 * Dear supporters,
 * I have been looking through alot of sites, but couldn’t resolve my different
   problems.
 * I’ll just start explaining the **mapping problem** since I believe permalink
   is …linked.
 * **Description**
    I made a secondary installation on a server called “h2o-verdunstung.
   com” I defined it within wp through a subdomain called “france.h20-verdunstung.
   com”
 * This worked well.
 * Then I installed the mapping plugin and tried to register within WP the name “
   hygropression.fr” over that subdomain…
 * DNS finds the address but…
    1. I noticed the links within the pages do not show the new name structure.
 * The strange thing is:
    The Domain mapping shows the subdomain twice (one being
   primary), besides “hygropression.fr”, but won’t take any change without breaking
   everything apart.
 * Could you please make a guess on what could be done as to make hygropression.
   fr primary? (And thus having the links not referring to “h2o-verdunstung at all”?
   That wopuld be so great!
 * Best regards …
    Chris

 * Well they won’t 🙂 You have to edit them. The links are hardcoded into your post
   content.

 * Fix ’em in your posts ONLY.

 * Thanks so much for that information Mika!
 * But wouldn’t you know of a way perhaps to get the right structure in the address
   bar to start with? meaning:
 * so that the public sees: “hygropression.fr/bla-bla-bla/item/
 * instead of seeing now: “france.h2o-verdunstung.com/bla-bla-bla/item/
 * regards

 * Is that a subsite on your domain or a true separate install of WP?

 * I just talked to the hosting people, and they assured me it should be a WP mapping
   problem, since the French address really does the redirecting job.
 * Let me state the problem again more precisely, hoping this can help understanding
   WP a bit more:
 * **Problem**
    the **links, permalinks, hover etc., in this subsite** will not
   accept to be remapped to another registered name even though the redirection,
   in itself, works.
 * In the browser address, **browsing history** will not show different page names,
   just the redirected adress (hygropression.fr)
 * **Attempts to fix**
    Going in the WP network-panel I see this mapping settings:(
   I confirm hereby: “france.h2o-..” being a “virtual” or “subsite” WP installation)
 * SiteID Domain Primary
    6 [http://www.hygropression.fr](http://www.hygropression.fr)
   No 6 hygropression.fr No 6 france.h2o-verdunstung.com Yes
 * I can put everything to “**primary-no**“. It doesn’t change any WP-behavior.
 * But, if I try to change “hygropression.fr” to **Primary-YES** – which should
   be the obvious fix for showing the proper adress in the links – ,
    then the WP
   administration panel of hygropression **loses immediately all formatting**, and
   the redirection which normally works, ends up as just a white page with **endless
   redirection** (from hygropression.fr to france.h2o-verdunstung.com)
 * I can then only revert the setting by going to the mapping section on the **network
   panel** which still works OK.
 * There is also another clue to this oddity:
    in the hygropression mapping section,
   the original subsite address appears twice: once with primary flag set, once
   without

 * OK, I’m doing more investigation in the case.
 * Apparently something quite similar has been [described in these pages](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/30-multisite-domain-headaches-mapping-dns-to-subdomain?replies=30)
   long time ago on WP 3.0 …
 * Even better I think is this: a clue from this other helpful supporter post from
   IPstenu :
    - **This is the closest I come to a [diagnosis](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/user-registration-on-subsite-in-multisite?replies=9)
      thus.**
    - Knowing I have the **main network site installed** in a **subfolder** to start
      with…
       this may be the reason why **from there** I **cannot remap** within
      the WP Multisite settings **to another (virtual)subsite** **whatever the settings
      would be**.
 * The only fix then, would be to reinstall (move?) the whole WP Install to the
   root? So then I could **remap a subsite properly with its own name**?
 * Maybe some knowledgeable supporter can confirm my understanding of these important
   WP specifics.

 * PS: Yet again – instead of reinstalling – I have the odd feeling that some expert
   settings in .htaccess could do the url-rewriting trick and everything would work
   fine. However that stuff is too high magic for me at this point.

 * You’re overthinking a lot of this.
 * > Then I installed the mapping plugin and tried to register within WP the name“
   > hygropression.fr” over that subdomain…
   > DNS finds the address but…
   > I noticed the links within the pages do not show the new name structure.
 * To clairify this, again, the plugin _does not_ go change the links within pages.
   You have to edit that yourself via a plugin or a script.
 * > But wouldn’t you know of a way perhaps to get the right structure in the address
   > bar to start with? meaning:
   > so that the public sees: “hygropression.fr/bla-bla-bla/item/
   > instead of seeing now: “france.h2o-verdunstung.com/bla-bla-bla/item/
 * Where exactly are you seeing this?
 * When I go to hygropression.fr I see hygropression.fr in the address bar.
 * The LINKS on that page, again, have to be edited BY YOU. This is NOT an automatic
   change.

 * Thanks Ipstenu for looking at that again.
    As you see it looks like nothing and
   yet it is short of driving me nuts.
 * > To clairify this, again, the plugin does not go change the links within pages.
   > You have to edit that yourself via a plugin or a script.
 * Perhaps I have expressed myself confusingly: it seems you’re speaking about hardcoded
   links whereas I’m focussed on permalinks root (reflecting also on the links within
   the main menu of every page). There’s no way to rewrite that root part except
   mapping is there?
 * > When I go to hygropression.fr I see hygropression.fr in the address bar.
 * Yeah. In fact any page will show that “hygropression.fr” address of the first
   page. That is a problem.
 * The address indicated when hovering the menu sections show france.h2o though…
   so that is not intended either.
 * The concrete drawback is more important than it seems: reloading a page always
   brings you back to the first page. Browser history also knows only one page: “
   hygropression.fr”, which gets confusing if not monotonous.

 * Right, the _permalinks root is hardcoded into your content_.
 * Seriously. The menus are actually _posts_ and their URLs are coded into their
   post content, so again, you have to edit the wp_posts table to correct _all existing
   content_.
 * If you don’t do this, there’s zero point in any further debugging because NOTHING
   will work properly.
 * > Yeah. In fact any page will show that “hygropression.fr” address of the first

 * Why?
 * You said you wanted france.h2o-verdunstung.com to show as hygropression.fr
 * [http://hygropression.fr/systemes-de-brumisation/klimatisierung/](http://hygropression.fr/systemes-de-brumisation/klimatisierung/)
   works 🙂
 * So we know you have it right, just fix your URLs like I keep telling you and
   see if that magically fixes it all.

 * Thanks for not giving up on me(yet ^-^).
 * OK – I tried the replacement solution within the post-table with the plugin called“
   better search and replace”.
 * It found and replaced with hygropression, the 132 ocurrence of “france.h2o-verdunstung.
   com” …
 * But where? Not in URLs anyways…?!
 * Going back to the site: theres no change at all to be noticed. Every url still
   mentions france.h2o-verdunst…
 * Also, any new page created automatically shows up as france.h2o-…/blabla.
 * So that does not seem to get me anywhere near a solution.

 * Yes I know. We probably don’t speak about the same things, Ipstenu.
 * I almost marked the issue as **resolved** though because I’m quite sure I found
   the culprit. It already works at least for the [http://www.hygropression.fr](http://www.hygropression.fr)
   name. The adresses show neatly like they should. All at once no more “france.
   h2o-verdunstung.com” nowhere to see. Sigh.
 * How I did it: After playing around one level higher (with the .htaccess) I figured
   the problem lay not within wordpress nor with the server, yet still higher i.
   e. with the registrar. Indeed, here, I had a DYN DNS redirection. I changed the
   IN A redirection in a CNAME alias for [http://www.hygropression.fr](http://www.hygropression.fr),
   and suddenly everything worked. I could set (as you could see) the site as primary
   within wordpress.
 * Still the double registration of france.h2o… is not gone.
    Here’s the [screenshot](http://h2o-verdunstung.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/doubletroublewp.jpg):
 * Fact is, I cannot fix the redirection with the “.hygropression.fr” part yet.
   The possibility to do this on the dyn dns dashboard is denied by that Registrar(
   OVH) for some reason. My request has not yet received attention by the support
   either. I’m confident this will do the trick though, so here my advice for WPMultisite
   which may be obvious for all hackers, but wasn’t not for me: don’t mess with
   DYN DNS IN-A. **Just set aliases**.
 * Cheers :-)…

   from making a mess of their own sites.

 * It’s getting tricky. Apparently CNAME only works on subdomains. Since A-IN redirection
   of .tld – I repeat – does not seem to work with a WP multisite located on subdirectory
   server space, I have to circumvent the problem :
 * So I redirected (in A) the main domain tld towards the www. with the now working
   CNAME. However then, I m’not able to show the clean “hygropression.fr” adress(
   it always show www). This bothers me still a bit.
 * Probably theres a .htaccess solution for stripping the name from the www? Will
   it be at last compatible to WP mapping? Hang on 😉 I’m getting there. (Soon to
   be Resolved!)
