 * I am trying to make a website into a membership/multisite network. I added the
necessary codes and created two subdomains to test it out. However, the subdomains
are not functioning like a multisite. Meaning, the default theme and content
from the main site didn’t transfer and each subdomain can just create their own
website. However, the main site is now functioning like a sub-site as I cannot
upload plugins or themes. Please advise
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fmultisite-not-functioning%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * The first thing you need to do is turn off the WordPress.com ‘sign on’ which
you probably enabled in Jetpack. I don’t use that feature myself so I suspect
that might be confusing things related to user roles.
 * The domain your site was known by before the change to multisite will now be
your main network site and the subsites will be brand new sites under whatever
   domain name you provide.
 * Your admin account will now be the super admin over your whole network.
 * You can only add plugins and themes via the network admin pages. As a super admin,
you can add plugins and themes where you or the site admin can then enable those
plugins and themes once the super admin makes them available to the network.
This is to protect the network from a site owner or site admin from adding just
   any old theme or plugin.
 * As far as content goes, you’ll need to remember each site is a new, discrete
website and the person in charge needs to bring in the content via migration
   or new content creation.

 * Thank you! So there isn’t a way for the content to automatically be enabled on
   subsites?

 * Keep in mind that each multisite is a brand new website. You’ll need to install
plugins, themes other than the default, and then the content…
 * You can migrate the content over from another site if you need to but you’ll
want to keep in mind the ‘duplicate content’ problem that might affect your SEO.
That is beyond the scope of WordPress support but I mention it for your consideration.
