# Need help IDing problem with theme

 * I have been struggling with trying to get this plugin to work on a dev site I’m
   working on. I’m using the recommended Client-ID OAuth credentials, and I can
   see what I expect to see once I authorize the plugin. But neither the Gutenberg
   block nor the shortcode displays anything.
 * I tried all the usual suspects like deactivating all the other plugins, but nothing
   worked.
 * Finally, I tried changing the theme to Twenty Twenty-One, and the calendars appeared.
 * I’m using a child theme. I tried using just the parent theme, in case I had managed
   to break something while customizing the child. The plugin doesn’t work in the
   parent theme, either.
 * This is the parent theme: [https://wplook.com/product/themes/non-profit/benevolence-church-wordpress-theme/](https://wplook.com/product/themes/non-profit/benevolence-church-wordpress-theme/)
 * **
    So my question is: are there specific things to check in the parent theme
   that might be interfering with the plugin?

 * Hi,
 * Do you have a link to the dev site? Maybe I see something that explains it.
 * I have used the plugin in some different themes and never experienced this issue,
   so my guess is that it’s something specific with this theme.

 * Right now, the dev site is running the Twenty Twenty-One theme so that I can
   continue to test the plugin (which is working just fine with that theme): [https://new.phoenixuu.org/connect/calendar/](https://new.phoenixuu.org/connect/calendar/)
 * The production site where I want to use the plugin is running a child theme of
   the WPLook Benevolence theme: [https://phoenixuu.org](https://phoenixuu.org) –
   but the plugin isn’t installed there yet.
 * When the dev site is running the child of the Benevolence theme, this is the
   code that’s generated where the calendar is supposed to be:
 * `<div class="pgc-calendar-wrapper pgc-calendar-page"><div class="pgc-calendar-
   filter"></div><div data-calendarids="[&quot;c_0ejk2ibdc44b51tt8bubdj8sqc@group.
   calendar.google.com&quot;,&quot;c_3iergn5785vg81qjes01uptv4o@group.calendar.google.
   com&quot;]" data-filter="top" data-eventpopup="true" data-eventlink="true" data-
   eventdescription="true" data-eventlocation="true" data-eventattachments="true"
   data-eventattendees="false" data-eventcreator="false" data-eventcalendarname="
   false" data-hidefuture="false" data-hidepassed="false" data-config="{&quot;header&
   quot;:{&quot;left&quot;:&quot;prev,next today&quot;,&quot;center&quot;:&quot;
   title&quot;,&quot;right&quot;:&quot;dayGridMonth,timeGridWeek,listWeek&quot;}}"
   data-locale="en_US" class="pgc-calendar"></div></div>`

 * I think the WPLook Benevolence theme is somehow interfering with the Javascript
   or CSS of the calendar plugin. But how exactly I cannot tell without seeing it
   in action. So if you could update the dev site to use the WPLook Benevolence
   child theme, maybe I can see the cause. I don’t have time right now to install
   this theme myself.

 * I think I see what’s causing it: the benevolence theme is also using FullCalendar(
   just as this plugin does) so there is a conflict.
 * Maybe it will work if you remove the fullcalendar directory (it’s inside the /
   inc/ directory inside the theme directory).

 * Unfortunately, that didn’t fix it.
 * The Benevolence theme has a custom post type called Events, so I’m guessing that’s
   what needs FullCalendar.
 * I first tried deactivating that custom post type – that didn’t help. Then I tried
   renaming the /fullcalendar directory, and finally moved the directory completely
   out of the theme directory. Still having a problem.
 * I did notice, while looking at the demo sites for Benevolence (where PGC doesn’t
   work) and Charitas (where PGC DOES work) is that both themes have the Events
   custom post type, but Benevolence also has the ability to display a Google calendar
   plus an events calendar showing internally-created events.
 * Charitas theme:

   [https://themes.wplook.com/charitas/past-events/](https://themes.wplook.com/charitas/past-events/)
   Only past and upcoming events
 * Benevolence theme:

 * Charitas doesn’t have the /fullcalendar directory

 * Yes the Charitas theme doesn’t use FullCalendar I think. Unfortunately there
   isn’t anything I can do at this point to make it work with the Benevolence theme.

 * Thank you for looking into this. I will continue to try to get some useful information
   from the Benevolence developers – maybe they will have a way to disable FullCalendar.

 * And I’m back!
 * Just in case someone else has a similar problem, I thought I would share what
   I found. In the theme’s /inc directory, there’s a file headerdata.php that registers
   JavaScript and enqueues CSS related to FullCalendar.
 * I simply deleted all those references, and now I can see the Private Google Calendars
   output. <cue wild celebrations!>
 * I might do some more experimentation to see if it’s the JS or the CSS that’s
   causing the conflict, but for now, I’m just happy that I can get it to work.

 * Thank you for sharing the solution. Based on your explanation, I think the Benevolence
   theme enqueues the FullCalendar scripts and styles with the same name as I do
   for this plugin. So the plugin files are never loaded. In a future update I will
   rename these enqueues, so maybe then it goes OK.

 * After all this, I’m not sure that it’s a problem with your plugin, actually.
 * Here is the theme code that enqueues the FullCalendar styles:
 *     ```
       		/*-----------------------------------------------------------
       			FullCalendar
       		-----------------------------------------------------------*/
       		wp_register_style( 'fullcalendar', get_template_directory_uri().'/inc/fullcalendar/fullcalendar.min.css' );

       		if ( is_page_template('template-events-calendar.php') || is_page_template('template-google-calendar.php')) {
       			wp_enqueue_style( 'fullcalendar' );
       		}
       ```
 * Note that it’s supposed to enqueue the style only for 2 specific templates. The
   same is true for the code that enqueues the JavaScript:
 *     ```
       		/*-----------------------------------------------------------
       			Moment, FullCalendar, Google Calendar
       		-----------------------------------------------------------*/
       		wp_register_script( 'moment', get_template_directory_uri().'/inc/fullcalendar/lib/moment.min.js', '', '', 'footer' );
       		wp_register_script( 'fullcalendar', get_template_directory_uri().'/inc/fullcalendar/fullcalendar.min.js', array( 'moment', 'jquery' ), '', 'footer' );
       		wp_register_script( 'fullcalendar-locale', get_template_directory_uri().'/inc/fullcalendar/locale-all.js', array( 'fullcalendar' ), '', 'footer' );
       		wp_register_script( 'gcal', get_template_directory_uri().'/inc/fullcalendar/gcal.js', array( 'fullcalendar' ), '', 'footer' );
       		if ( is_page_template('template-events-calendar.php') ||  is_page_template('template-google-calendar.php')) {
       			wp_enqueue_script( 'moment' );
       			wp_enqueue_script( 'fullcalendar' );
       			wp_enqueue_script( 'fullcalendar-locale' );
       			wp_enqueue_script( 'gcal' );
       		}
       ```

 * Yet in my dev site, fullcalendar.min.js is being loaded on every page, regardless
   of the template, unless I comment out or delete the code that registers and enqueues
   it. This is the source from a page with the Default template:
 *     ```
       <strong><script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/themes/benevolence-wpl/inc/fullcalendar/fullcalendar.min.js?ver=5.8.1' id='fullcalendar-js'></script></strong>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/moment/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_moment-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/moment-timezone/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_moment_timezone-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/daygrid/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_daygrid-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/timegrid/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_timegrid-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/list/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_list-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://new.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/core/locales-all.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_locales-js'></script>
       ```
 * On the theme demo site, that doesn’t happen on pages that don’t use one of those
   two templates.
 * It’s also not happening on my production site, which is “basically” (that’s the
   key, right?) the same as the dev site except for a difference in various plugins.
   So now it’s time for me to figure out what’s going on with my dev site, and test
   the plugin on my production site, to see if it works there.
 * Wish me luck!
 * Ah… I may have spoken too soon.
 * I installed PGC on my production site. This is what I see when I view source
   on any given page with the plugin activated:
 *     ```
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://www.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/themes/benevolence-wpl/inc/fullcalendar/fullcalendar.min.js?ver=5.8.1' id='fullcalendar-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://www.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/moment-timezone/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_moment_timezone-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://www.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/daygrid/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_daygrid-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://www.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/timegrid/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_timegrid-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://www.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/list/main.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_list-js'></script>
       <script type='text/javascript' src='https://www.phoenixuu.org/wp-content/plugins/private-google-calendars/lib/fullcalendar4/core/locales-all.min.js?ver=20201204' id='fullcalendar_locales-js'></script>
       ```

 * **It’s loading the fullcalendar.min.js from the theme in addition to loading
   the JS from your plugin.**
 * But without your plugin activated, there’s nothing related to FullCalendar in
   the source at all.
 * So perhaps I’m missing something, but it seems like your plugin is somehow causing
   the JS from the theme to load unless edit the theme to make it not enqueue the
   fullcalendar.min.js at all.

 * Based on your comment about the naming conflict, I edited lines 382 – 398 in
   the private-google-calendars.php file to change the script name from “fullcalendar”(
   which was also used by the Benevolence theme) to “fullcalendar_pgc”. That seems
   to have solved the problem, even on pages where the theme loads its scripts.
 *     ```
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_pgc',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/core/main.min.js', ['my_moment_timezone'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_moment',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/moment/main.min.js', ['fullcalendar_pgc'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_moment_timezone',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/moment-timezone/main.min.js', ['fullcalendar_moment'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_daygrid',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/daygrid/main.min.js', ['fullcalendar_pgc'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_timegrid',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/timegrid/main.min.js', ['fullcalendar_daygrid'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_list',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/list/main.min.js', ['fullcalendar_pgc'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('fullcalendar_locales',
             plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'lib/fullcalendar4/core/locales-all.min.js',
             ['fullcalendar_pgc'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
         wp_enqueue_script('pgc', plugin_dir_url(__FILE__) . 'js/pgc.js',
             ['fullcalendar_pgc'], PGC_PLUGIN_VERSION, true);
       ```
 * I haven’t started fiddling with the styles yet, so I might need to do the same
   there, but thank you for the suggestion about renaming your script. Now I don’t
   have to worry about the next time I update the theme, and I’ll just set the plugin
   so that it doesn’t auto-update.
 * From your post ([https://wordpress.org/support/topic/need-help-iding-problem-with-theme/#post-15019733](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/need-help-iding-problem-with-theme/#post-15019733))
   I see that my guess seems to be correct: this plugin loads fullcalendar with
   the “fullcalendar” name which is the same name that your theme is using to load
   fullcalendar. Somehow the themes fullcalendar file takes precedence over the
   plugins file. That’s why the theme fullcalendar file is loaded and not the plugin
   one.
 * From your last post ([https://wordpress.org/support/topic/need-help-iding-problem-with-theme/#post-15019879](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/need-help-iding-problem-with-theme/#post-15019879))
   it looks like renaming the fullcalendar name will solve it. If this is true,
   then I will publish a new version of this plugin.
 * Yes, that does appear to be true. I ended up renaming both the enqueued style
   and the enqueued script to fullcalendar_pgc, and so far, it’s working.
 * If you want me to test the new plugin version before you launch it, I’d be happy
   to.
 * Thanks again for the help and for this great plugin. It is going to save our
   organization a ton of time and reduce stress all around.
