# New Install – upload plugin error

 * New install into subdomain.
    Attempt to upload plugin – error message demonstrated
   a lack of directory to upload to. Then created “upload” directorey and also subdirectories–
   2016/07 Permissions set at 755 did not work, nor set at 777
 * Error message:
    “The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2016/
   07”. This directory exists. All file permissions from and including wpcontent
   set to 777
 * Puzzled, so anyone with a solution, please earn my everlasting thanks!

 * Plugins should be uploaded to `wp-content/plugins`…i’m assuming you are aware
   of this since your profile is 8 yrs old. The above directory is for media uploads.
 * Are you attempting to upload from within the WP admin panel under `plugins > 
   add new > upload plugin` or are you using an FTP client?

 * Hi Keith, Thanks for your prompt reply.
    Yes, have been about for a bit and that
   is why I am scratching my head. I am using the “upload file” link within WP –
   in the plugins page area.
 * I can see the media that has been uploaded via the “wp-content/uploads/2016/07”–
   all media.
 * Maybe there is a switch somewhere – clutching at straws, here. Should I remove
   the “upload” folder I placed under wp-contents.
    I used a fresh database to avoid
   any cross-over problems. Lost in the wilderness.

 * OK, removed instalation, created new database, adjusted wp-config.php to point
   to new dbase.
    Uploaded wp files. used wp-admin/install.php Then: Tried to upload
   theme using wp theme upload zip file routine. Got this response: Unable to create
   directory wp-content/uploads/2016/07. Is its parent directory writable by the
   server?
 * File permissions for subdomain, wp-content, all set to 755.
 * Not giving up, but crawling to the back of the cave is an option, right now.
 * Finally!
    Changed all permissions from subdomain to wp-content to 777 – feeling
   a bit apprehensive but this is working, right now. Shall winnow the settings 
   down until path fails.

 * Yes, definitely change the permissions back to 755 and maybe contact your host
   as to why 777 was needed? I’m still confused about the `wp-content/uploads/2016/
   07` bit since themes and plugins do not go there. That is a media folder 🙂
