NextGen Gallery 403 Forbidden error

I installed NextGen gallery in the /gallery directory as described, then created a subdirectory and FTPd some images to the folder. NextGen sniffed the files and created the thumbs perfect.

I cannot browse to the gallery however in the browser. I get a 403 Forbidden you dont have acccess error. Ive changed the permissions on the /gallery and /gallery/subdirectory folder to 777 and it does not solve the problem.

Im doing something stupid, just need someone to point it out to me. I can browse to the images using the longhand URL literal.
