Nginx rewrites for a fresh WordPress Multisite

So I’ve been doing some reading on WordPress Multisite + Nginx and I’m a bit confused as to whether or not the current rewrite rules listed all over are correct. I see lots of references to /files and ms-files and from what I’m gathering that is no longer the way a fresh WordPress install would work. Is that correct or is there something that I’m not understanding?

All that being said, I can’t seem to find rewrite rules that don’t call for the /files upload directory. Can anyone share an example of what the correct rewrite rules would be for a fresh WordPress 3.9 installation with Multisite subdirectories?
