 * I go through 1&1.com hosting services and they do not make phpMyAdmin available
to their subscribers. I’ve looked everywhere on the site and contacted customer
support. There is no way to export my data.
 * Can I (trepeditiously so) simply make the upgrade without affecting the database?
 * I’d really love to upgrade to 1.5. It looks great!

 * First, 1&1 – effectively they are holding you hostage by giving you no tools
with which to export your data. I think that stinks and is a damn good reason
to leave them. Sooner rather than later is better.
 * The upgrade should be safe enough though if you read what’s what and take it
   carefully.

 * I use 1&1 and they do allow phpMyAdmin. If you look in the FAQs, you’ll find
   how to use it 😉

 * Nah, Ben, I’ve just been through it with 1&1 quite a few times. I found it very
difficult to set it up the way they advise in the FAQs. You can download phpMyAdmin
from their own site and ftp it to your 1&1 account and set it up that way if
you can’t get this to work for you. You have to be meticulous in your settings
to get it to work, but it will–eventually–work.

 * podz – thems fighting words…. 1&1 isn’t holding anyone hostage… in fact, they
give you the freedom to choose the admin tool you do want… unlike other CP’s
that come with other hosts. I’ve been using 1&1 for awhile now and am quite happy
with it…. I’ve had less problems with them than I ve seen others around here.
 * Using a “missing” feature is a poor excuse to not use a host. While we are at
it, why don’t we just blast all the host that don’t allow you to install WP via
Fantastico and leave them simply because they don’t offer it built-in. Please,
I thought you were better than that.
 * At any rate, it’s possible to create a folder, upload phpMyAdmin, set the appropriate
config settings (and upload it too) and do what you need. I do this all the time.

 * I think Podz was just suggesting that any hosting company would be holding you
hostage if they didn’t provide a tool to export your data. The only reason he
mentioned 1&1 directly is because it’s the subject of this topic.

 * My apologies to 1&1.
 * macmanx has it – hosting is both a simple yet complex “thing” and it’s far too
easy for a new user to be sucked in by hype about huge diskspace, massive bandwidth
yet no tools to effectively manage their space and by the time the user knows,
   they literally are hooked in.
 * While those of us who are savvy enough to dig around and through the mire of
techno-jargon may be fine with hosts burying information, it is posts like the
OP that illustrate how far companies still need to go to make what can be simple,
   simple.
 * Like I said though, apologies for badmouthing this company (though their customer
support would seem to need that link too 🙂 )

 * And I appoligize too… it’s been a long week. But I’ve also seen things the other
way too, being held hostage to the tools of the CP and unable to use anything
   else.
 * I go agree that their cust support leaves a little to be desired, but I’ve had
nothing but good experiences w/ it.

 * I’m another who’s _now_ quite happy with 1&1. It took awhile to get used to the
way they do things and have things laid out, but it all seems to be there. WordPress
was actually the easiest blog system to install on 1&1 — of course, that may
be because it was the _last_ blog I installed. 🙂
