 * I was hoping to get some advice. I’m going to be releasing an open source simulation/
   game. I’d like to use a theme or theme plugins that cater to a system involving
   signups, forums, downloads (ie, like this site).
 * Any suggestions for a theme/plugin package?

 * There’s pretty much plugins to do all the things you’re mentioning in your post.
   Did you have a look at [BuddyPress](http://buddypress.org/)? Good stuff there.
