Oxygen Theme Display Issues

    Hey everyone! I just made the transition from wordpress.com to .org, and I’m trying to recreate my old site with Oxygen. My new site is http://www.huntingforgod.org and my old one is http://huntingforgod.wordpress.com/.
    These are some of the issues and questions I’ve uncovered thus far:
    1. My old website allowed me to choose a background image, as well as maintain a solid background color behind the text. How can I set the new site up to do the same?
    2. The slider on my home page doesn’t seem to be displaying images properly… The magnified version of the images are covering the thumbnails on the bottom. How can I resolve this?
    3. I understand that the “sticky” functionality for adding posts to the slider is a little different in this version, but once I’ve got my posts set up as featured/primary/secondary, will I have to manually go in and edit those settings on each post when I add a new to keep them flowing properly?

    I knew going in that it would take some time to work out the kinks, but I’m running into some issues that are feeling just a touch out of my league at the moment. If any of you could point me in the right direction, I’d greatly appreciate it.

    ALWAYS Make a backup of your site, before making any changes!!

    1. Use FTP to backup the files.
    2. Make sure to also backup your database:
      > dashboard > tools > export > all content > download exportfile
    3. If required: confirm installation of export tool and run the export

    You now have a fallback position, should things go wrong!

    NEXT:
    Use a childtheme to make the changes in
    Suggestion: use the ‘one click childtheme plugin’.
    Don’t make any changes to a theme itself. Instead make the changes to a childtheme. Should the author of your original theme update the theme, your changes will not be overwritten. Your site with your adaptations will remain intact.

    1. Installed the childtheme? Now activate it.
      Check if things look ‘normal’.
    2. Use FTP to access the files of your site and it’s childtheme.
    3. Use NOTEPAD++ or proper EDITOR [not wordprosessor] to edit css and php.
    4. To make the changes in the CHILDtheme:
      – copy php files / css-file(s) of the original theme [as required] to the childtheme directory and edit them as required.

    How do you find out which style / code to change?

    1. Install a browser add-onn called ‘firebug’.
    2. Open your site, ri-click and inspect with firebug.
    3. Click the 2nd icon at the bottom-left to point and inspect a site-element
    4. Firebug will show you which code applies.
    5. Play around with it in firebug until you’ve found the correct settings, or add some css-code.
    6. Copy the code
    7. Open the style.css of the childtheme and paste the new code in.
    8. Save and Upload the new style.css
    9. Check the result in the browser
      [ press <CTRL-F5> ]

    NOTE!!
    Study the basics of HTML and CSS.
