Parse error

    error message: parse error, syntax error in …. line 34

    I have read nearly every single post on this error and still can’t figure what’s wrong. So, please, can anybody tell me what’s wrong with this line?

    <div class=”date”><span><?php the_time(‘F j, Y’); ?></span> |

    Any advice would be very much appreciated as I’m ready to tear my hair out.
