parse error/syntax error

    When I try to view my website I get this message:
    Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/easys18/public_html/promotehealthylife/wp-includes/default-filters.php on line 231

    I contacted my hosting support and they said this:

    Your WordPress installations appear to have been exploited.

    If you check the code in the following pages you will see the injected code;

    /public_html/promotehealthylife/index.php

    /public_html/promotehealthylife/index.php

    In checking further it appears that both are older, outdated versions (you are running version 2.8.6 and the latest version is 2.9).

    You need to update these to the latest version.

    However I can’t log in to my WP account area. How am I supposed to update if I can’t log in? What else can I do?
