# Permalink / 500 Error

 * I updated my Permalink preferences and now get a 500 error. I know the .htaccess
   file is getting corrupted. At this point, I don’t care if permalinks work, I 
   just want to go back to where I was. I can’t even delete the new Permalink preferences
   without generating a 500. Is there any way to get around this?

 * I have been deleting the .htaccess file. That revives the site but it doesn’t
   correct the error in the Permalinks. Whenever I do anything that changes .htaccess,
   the site goes 500.

 * That sounds more like a hosting problem than a WordPress problem. Have you contacted
   your hosting provider?

 * Of course, Bluehost said it was a WordPress problem. Based on the numerous permalink
   problems listed in this forum, I tend to side with Bluehost. I have read a few
   dozen posts and none seem to provide a solution.

 * For the record, I never had a problem with my permalinks under Bluehost, and 
   I haven’t heard any Bluehost users complaining either.

 * WordPress is the problem, not Bluehost.

 * Delete your current .htaccess file and put only this line in a new .htaccess 
   file (don’t worry, you can delete it later):
 * `Redirect / http://wordpress.org/`
 * The above line is a standard by-the-book temporary redirect. It should redirect
   any point of your site to wordpress.org. If that causes your site to issue a 
   500 error, or if it simply doesn’t work, then the problem is BlueHost’s, not 
   WordPress’.

 * Two hours of my life are gone but here is what I did to fix. First, I deleted
   the Category Base entry and ignored Structure. It updated fine but the site was
   still MIA. Whenever I went in to Permalinks admin, ht was immediately corrupted,
   so I was just going in circles. This last time, I went in to Perm Admin, then
   deleted the ht file, then deleted Perm instructions, and it updated properly.
 * My baby has come back.
