# Permalink Issues

 * I’ve recently installed wordpress and went through the process of [giving it its own directory](http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory).
   Everything was fine until I went to change the permalink structure. Once I did
   that, my blog would not longer generate the posts properly.
 * My blog is at: [http://veronicawong.ca/blog/](http://veronicawong.ca/blog/)
    
   my custom permalink structure: /blog/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/
 * It works fine when the Default permalink structure is selected, but not any of
   the others. I know it has something to do with the .htaccess file, and I’ve combed
   the forums and tried the random tricks to no avail. I tried deleting the .htaccess
   file altogether, and WordPress _did_ generate a new one, so I don’t think that’s
   a problem.
 * I’m not skilled in apache (i have no idea what that is…) so the things I’ve read
   about that look like Greek to me. I should also note that I’ve installed WordPress
   on this server before, and changing the Permalink structure did not give me this
   error the last time.
 * Any help?

 * Your single posts are coming up just fine with your custom permalink turned on–
   they are using the exact custom permalink you wanted.
 * So the problem is probably not your permalinks but the way your blog page is 
   configured.
 * In Settings / Reading, see if you have a static home page configured , and even
   more important, have assigned a posts page. If you want your top page (home page)
   to be the posts page, make sure you have not assigned a posts page in Settings/
   Reading. Also you will not want a static home page.
 * These are the first things that come to my mind.

 * All the settings are as they should be:
    - Front page display latest posts
    - blog pages shows 10 posts
 * Any other ideas?

 * Those are not the settings I was referring to.
 * On Settings / **Readings** – check the things I pointed out in prev post

 * Those **are** the settings under Settings / Readings.
 * I do not have a static home page configured, not have I assigned a posts page.
   I have it set to display my latest posts.

 * I think it might be an issue with the fact that I’m trying to give my wordpress
   its own directory while leaving the blog in the root directory.
 * Under Settings / General I have:
    WordPress address (URL): [http://veronicawong.ca/blog](http://veronicawong.ca/blog)
   Blog address (URL): [http://veronicawong.ca/](http://veronicawong.ca/)
 * If I have this, then I receive the error. However, if I have [http://veronicawong.ca/blog](http://veronicawong.ca/blog)
   in blog address, then the blog works fine.
 * Would you know any way around this?
